Why Roanoke?
Proverbs 29:18 says, "Where there is no prophetic vision, the people perish (or cast off restraint)." Therefore, let us cast the vision clearly for you. We believe to see the Spirit of God fall like fire on Roanoke. We contend that the gifts of the Spirit did NOT cease at Pentecost but continue today for those who earnestly cry out to the Lord of the harvest. As such, we will be a church that expects to see God do miracles, signs and wonders in and through us. That is why we desire to mobilize YOU for the work of the ministry. We have identified three main areas of concern in our city: abortion/lack of care for pregnant women, homelessness/food insecurity and drug use. But our work doesn't stop there! Roanoke is home to several colleges, a large medical community and tons of families that are waiting for the hope we have to offer them.
35,132
Abortions performed in Virginia in 2023
In 2024, abortions in Virginia increased by 13% with somewhere over 3,500 now performed each MONTH. We want to see Roanoke changed by the power of God, and that starts by reaching the most underserved. We desire to come alongside pregnant mama's and help them choose life!
20.6%
Increase in homelessness in Roanoke since 2023
Homelessness and food insecurity continues to be a major concern among city leaders and residents and we desire to aid in the protection of our cities most vulnerable by providing for their immediate needs. 1 in 5 children in southwest Virginia faces hunger. It is our job as the church to change that.
Top 30
In the US for overdose fatalities
Roanoke maintains some of the highest non-fatal overdose rates in the country per capita. Our people are suffering. They are desperately searching for something to dull the pain, and we desire to reach these beloved individuals with the hope of the Gospel.
Facing an unplanned pregnancy is scary, but we are here to help! No mama should go it alone nor without her and her babies needs being met. From day one, we will offer the hope closet complete with everything they could need--diapers, wipes, cribs, clothing (mama and baby) and much more--for FREE! But we know those items don't pay the bills nor sustain long-term, so we want to be a church that is outrageously generous and helps moms get back on their feet financially.
We recognize that it's hard to hear of your need for a savior when your basic physical needs aren't met. That's why we want to be a safe place--a refuge--for those that are in desperate situations. It is the goal of Second City to have a fully operational winter shelter by December 2026. In the meantime, we are pleased to offer hot meals, basic necessities, and HOPE to anyone struggling.
We in no way can replace the need for rehabilitation centers, but we want to come alongside those struggling under the weight of addiction. The Gospel offers hope for the hopeless, and we know that addiction is a breeding ground for hopelessness. We would love to pair you with someone who has walked the road before you and found freedom themselves.
